Tattoo History #1 – The Fulani Tribe, West Africa

2 11 2009

Fula girlThe Fulani people of West Africa are the largest nomadic group in the world. Historically, they consist of a diverse group of people who were conquered and became a part of the Islamic faith.  Culturally, the Fulani people hold beauty in high regards. Facial tattoos are a means of expressing beauty where at puberty girls will  tattoo their upper lip.  After marriage, they also tattoo the lower lip as a sign of belonging. One belief, as to why tattooing of the lips are so popular amongst African tribes, was to save young girls from being sold into slavery because traders were only in the market for “unblemished” girls.

Today, extensive decorative facial tattoos are done amongst nomadic tribes of northern Nigeria and bordering countries.  Many times the facial tattoos express moods – stripes down the the cheeks to symbolize tears or markings at the corners of the mouth to depict a constant smile.

Newest crew member to Jaz Tattoo – Mistah Metro

24 09 2009
Mistah Metro

Mistah Metro began tattooing back in 2004. A cousin who was a tattoo artist, until he dove in to the world of computer graphics, sold him all his equipment. With little knowledge and no experience Metro started reading many books and hanging out at tattoo shops. Being a tattoo artist was a long time dream of young Metro. He remembers drawing on classmates with markers, they would give him a couple bucks to draw their name and a quick design. Although tattooing was always his dream there is a huge difference in tattooing skin and drawing on someone with a marker. After gaining enough courage and “book knowledge” his girlfriend let him do his first tattoo. The results were pretty good and for the next year he practiced on all his friends and even some family members. He decided he was ready to work in a shop.

Mistah Metro worked at Blackstar Tattoo Studio for another year until they closed. Although the hours were long he gained much insight on how to become a better tattoo artist. He learned everything from fundamentals and proper design layout to dealing better with clients. The experience was most definitely beneficial to his career and growth.

Mistah Metro will be joining the crew of Black Lotus/Jaz Tattoo October 1st.  He looks at tattoos as a spiritual journey between the tattoo artist and the person receiving his work. It is a right of passage which can not be rushed or taken for granted. Planning and patience is essential in the creation of a successful design. Mistah Metro specializes in custom, one of a kind designs which includes, but is not limited to, native, old school, lettering, japanese, and floral designs. He works with disposable needles and tubes and is also licensed by the New York State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. “Northern New Jersey artist Lee Iturbe,an Illustration
graduate of New York City’s School of Visual Arts,
explores the bizarre with his expressionist pieces.
With a unique atmospheric style using a variety of
mediums, and influences ranging from comic books,
old horror films and vintage cartoons to street art,
Iturbe experiments with the grotesque. He quietly
oozes fragments of himself into his idiosyncratic
work. Iturbe is not afraid to depict the strange, odd
and disturbing things that creep into his imagination.
His work is both honest and personal; he is capable
of channeling the darkest parts of human imagination,
parts that we all possess, but so few of us can tap into.”
- A. Myerson

Lee Iturbe, born and raised in Northern New Jersey, started sketching when he was a young child
and was influenced by his numerous phenomenons. As a fan of horror films, he took pleasure
in drawing monsters and gruesome images, which as a kid, would get him into troublesome
circumstances (resulting in therapy). Throughout his youth, other outside factors influenced
him included comic books and cartoons. He continued to paint art all through his high school
years, but quickly became frustrated as a result of teachers only being interested in having
students construct art exactly the way the course was designed. This allowed for little
to no room to be creative. Despite this, he decided to continue to dedicate his life to art,
the passion he truly loved. Upon high school graduation he began attending The School
of Visual Arts in New York City which was a learning experience. Living in the New York City
for the four years, while attending college, exposed him to types of art he had always
overlooked, such as street art. Overtime, he graduated New York Citys School of Visual Arts
with bachelors degree in illustration & is currently pursuing a career in the art world.
